Pikelets and horses. Learning how to be us.

Learning how things are done in  Te Whiria o te Toutouwai  In the beginning weeks of school there is a big focus on establishing the culture of the class… how things are done and what the expectations are. Cooking allows the children to learn that we all get a turn to do things and no one will miss out. It also encourages patience as well working together for a desired outcome… in this case yummy pikelets with strawberry jam. On Friday we also went on a hikoi to look for the horses who live down the road. We practiced moving safely around the community and crossing roads. Sadly, the horses were not there and although we were disappointed, we ate the carrots we took for them and went back to school. We will go and see them another day. 16 February 2023

Monarch Butterflies 10/02/2023

Image
Monarch Butterflies We have two swan plants in our classroom. One already had a chrysalis on it which hatched into a butterfly on the first day. We took this butterfly to the dahlias so that it could eat and fly around to meet other butterflies. Some of the children knew about the swan plants near the Playcentre so we went for a walk to see all the life stages: eggs, tiny caterpillars, bigger caterpillars, chrysalises and butterflies.  Toutouwai 10 February 2023

Chocolate Chippie Biscuits 10/02/2023

Chocolate Chippie Biscuits On Friday William’s mum, Jess, came along to teach us how to bake chocolate chippie biscuits. Everyone had a turn at adding ingredients and stirring the mixture. Then we rolled the mixture into balls and flattened them out. Jess took the biscuits to the staffroom to cook. We waited patiently for them to be ready. Once they were cooked, we enjoyed them while they were still warm with a cup of milo. Toutouwai 10 February 2023
